Imaginative Wild West Decorations

Howdy pardner! If it’s time for a little one’s party, and all things cowboy or cowgirl are a favorite, be sure not to neglect the Wild West décor to set the mood for the event. Most parents can easily come up with invitations and a cake to match the theme, and with a little creativity, the entire room can play a role in making the day even more special.

Wild West party decorations should greet the guests before they even walk into the front door. Buy a bale or two of hay to set by the front porch with a big “Howdy” sign. Tuck a few colorful bandanas into the hay to add some color and consider putting a stick horse or two leaned up against the bale. If you’re feeling really creative, cut out a version of saloon doors out of butcher paper to tape to your front door. These obviously won’t swing back and forth, but they’ll add to the ambiance.

Once inside the house, the western party decorations and theme should continue throughout the space. There are a number of ways to spruce up the room. Consider purchasing a variety of cowboy hats and hanging them from streamers across the rooms. Hats typically sold as party favors or costume pieces are light weight and inexpensive. These can then be sent home with the guests at the end of the day. Use bandanas strung together to make a garland instead of streamers. If you are lucky enough to know anyone who actually owns a horse, see about borrowing a saddle to mount on an ottoman or an additional bale of hay. Let the kids climb up into the saddle for pictures. Note, if you are bringing a bale of hay into the house, lay a blanket underneath and make sure the kids aren’t overly rough with it. If this idea won’t work inside your home, do it on the porch or in the back yard.

Western theme decorations can also be used in conjunction with the food you are serving. Serve everything on ‘tin’ plates. You can usually find inexpensive foil-like pie tins in the grocery store. It’s even better if you have a range of actual mismatched pie tins on hand, as they will fit right in. Put chips or other finger foods in additional tins as serving platters to add to the look. Use bandanas as napkins. If you’re stumped for additional western decorating ideas, don’t forget the boots! A boot can be the centerpiece, with a bouquet of flowers inside. If flowers are not what you pictured, consider balloons or cookies to enhance the boot centerpiece. Have the kids sit on western blankets around the ‘campfire’ to eat their goodies. Your ‘campfire’ can be any one of a number of things: an orange pillow, a construction paper picture or a flashlight. Use your imagination!

With all the Wild West decorations, make sure you have some games to match the themes. Have stick horse races or play pin the badge on the sheriff. Make a small lasso and have the kids take turns trying to ‘rope’ an object. Use a traffic cone, or a bucket as the ‘calf’. This game should be supervised extra carefully and the rope must be put away, out of reach, as soon as the game is over. Horseshoes is another game that matches this theme well and is easy and fun to play.

Fun Wild West decorations will help make a western themed event a big success. Many of the items are fairly inexpensive, and several, like bandanas and hats, can double as party favors for the guests.
