The Great Piggy Freeze
Here’s a really cool game that’s fun for all ages. Gather up ice cubes and put them in a bowl. Doesn’t sound too difficult, right?… Unless you can only use your feet!
Style: Competitive
Type: Water Games for Kids
What You’ll Need:
- 2 kiddie wading pools
- 2 bowls or 1 bowl for each player
- 2 big bags of ice cubes
How to play:
- Fill the kiddie pools with water.
- Then put a big empty bowl in the middle of each pool so that it floats around.
- Divide the players into two teams.
- Get everyone take off their shoes and socks and have them sit around the edge of the pools with their feet over the water.
- Next drop the ice cubes into the pools.
- When you say “Go!”, each team must try to get as many ice cube as they can into their bowl in the allotted time (e.g. 60 seconds, 2 minutes) — using only their FEET!
- When the time is up the team with the most ice cubes in their bowl wins. Or just play for the fun of it without winners!
Variations:
- If the pool is too big, give each kid their own bowl.

Slippery Balloon “POP”

- Toss a bunch of blown up balloons into a kiddie pool.

Water Limbo
How low can you go… without getting soaked! This is a fun game for all ages.
Style: Competitive
Type: Outdoor Water Games for Kids
What You’ll Need:
- 1 garden hose with a source of water
- An adjustable nozzle (optional)
- Great limbo music and a music player (e.g.: CD player or tape deck)
How to play:
- Turn the hose on and adjust the nozzle so that there is a narrow steady stream of water flowing from it. If it doesn’t have a nozzle just put your thumb over the left or right half of the opening to create one steady jet of water.
- This water stream is the limbo stick.
- Start the limbo music and hold the limbo stick steady.
- The players must walk under the limbo stick without touching it.
- After each round, lower the limbo stick an inch or two.
- The lower the water stream gets the funnier it gets as the player must bend backwards and shimmy under (really young children may crawl).
- When a player touches the bar (i.e.: gets wet!), she’s out.
- Continue playing until there’s only one dry player (or fairly dry player) left in the game — She’s the winner.

High-Water Jump
This game is the opposite of Water Limbo.
Style: Competitive
Type: Water Games for Kids
What You’ll Need:
- 1 garden hose with a source of water
- An adjustable nozzle (optional)
- Great party music and a music player (e.g.: CD player or tape deck)
- Trampoline (optional, only for variation below)
How to play:
- Turn the hose on and adjust the nozzle so that there is a narrow steady stream of water flowing from it. If it doesn’t have a nozzle just put your thumb over the left or right half of the opening to create one steady jet of water.
- This water stream is the pole the player must jump over.
- Start the music and hold the pole steady.
- The players must jump over the pole without touching it.
- After each round, raise the pole an inch or two.
- The high water stream gets the funnier it gets as the player must jump higher to avoid touching the pole and getting wet.
- When a player touches the pole (i.e.: gets wet!), he’s out.
- Continue playing until there’s only one dry player (or fairly dry player) left in the game — he’s the winner.
Variations:
- Have the kids play this game on the trampoline (preferably one that’s enclosed with a safety net) a more challenging variation.

Water Gun Wars
Make sure you warn your guests to wear old clothes (light colors work best) that they don’t mind getting stained.
Style: Competitive
Type: Outdoor Water Games for Kids
What You’ll Need:
- 2 kiddie pools.
- Food coloring (1 color for each group) or one of the new bath water coloring products like “Tub Tints” (these are non-toxic, won’t irritate eyes, and may be less likely to stain — check the label for more details).
- Water guns for each kid.
- Cheap white T-shirt for each kid.
How to play:
- Place the kiddie pools about 15-20 feet apart.
- Fill the kiddie pools with a few inches of water and put some food coloring in each pool (use a different color for each pool).
- Divide the kids up into two groups and assign each group to a kiddie pool.
- Give each kid a white T-shirt and water gun and let them fill it up from their team pool.
- Then turn them loose and let the water wars begin. (Make each team’s pool their safety home base.
- Each kid will know when they’ve been hit because they’ll see the colored water marks from the other team.
- You can even assign points for the different parts of the body (i.e.: arm – 1 pt, leg – 2 pts, chest – 3 pts, and so on).

Ice Ball Surprise

Want a great party favor for your young guests on a hot summer day? Here’s a really cool one.
What You’ll Need:
- An assortment of small toys, plastic jewelry or other small theme related items.
- Balloon (regular sturdy balloons not small thin water balloons).
How to play:
- For each kid, insert a small toy or piece of plastic jewelry into a balloon.
- Fill the water balloon with water, knot and freeze solid over night with the prize inside.
- Cut away the water balloon before giving the kids their icy surprise.
- Young kids will have fun pushing their ice balls around in a kiddie pool and watching them melt revealing their hidden surprise.

Jump Rope “Splash”
This wonderful water game for kids adds a twist (or should we say “splash”) to the traditional game of “Jump Rope”
Style: Competitive

What You’ll Need:
- A plastic cup
- Water
- A jump rope
- A measuring cup
How to play:
- Have two kid twirl the jump rope.
- Give the first kid a cup of water and have her jump rope with the cup in her hand (either hand) for a certain about of time, for the length of a song, or a specified number of jumps.
- Then measure the amount of water left in the cup.
- The game continues like this until each kid has had a chance to play.
- The kid who spilled the least amount of water (i.e. has the most water left in their cup) is the winner.
- If you have any ties you can have a play-off round.

Musical Sprinkler Freeze
The great thing about this game, is that everyone’s a winner (and everyone gets soaked!!).

What You’ll Need:
- 1 or more sprinklers
- Great party music and a music player (e.g.: CD player or tape deck)
How to play:
- Set up the sprinkler(s) in the play area and have all the players gather round.
- Start the game with the sprinkler(s) turned off.
- Then turn on the music and encourage everyone to act goofy (e.g.: jump, dance, strike funny poses, etc.).
- When the music is turned off everyone must freeze immediately (holding whatever pose they were in when the music stopped) and get drenched until the sprinkler(s) are turned off again.
- Call attention to the funniest looking poses, the poses that are the hardest to hold, the most soaked player, etc.

Dribble, Dribble, Drench!
Sounds familiar doesn’t it? That’s because it’s a wet a wild variation of that old favorite kid’s game called “Duck, Duck, Goose.”
Style: Competitive

What You’ll Need:
- 1 sponge
- 1 bucket of water
How to play:
- Have the kids sit in a circle in the grass.
- The kid that’s “It” walks around the outside of the circle with the wet sponge.
- “It” holds the sponge over each and lets a little water dibble on their heads and says, “Dibble.”
- At any time, “It” may squeeze the sponge out over a kid’s head and call out “Drench” instead of “Dibble.”
- Then “Drench” (the soaked kid) must jump up and chase “It” around the circle.
- “Drench” must try to tag “It” before “It” sits in “Drench’s” empty place.
- If “It” is tagged, he is “It” again. If not, then “Drench” becomes “It”.
- Continue until all players have had a chance to be “It”.

Slip-N-Slide
Turn your backyard into a waterslide park with this wacky water game for kids.
Style: Non-competitive

What You’ll Need:
- A 30 feet long sheet of “thick” plastic sheeting (available at hardware stores – Don’t use garbage bags!).
- A grassy area free of rocks, tree roots or other debris.
- A hose or sprinkler for a continuous water supply.
How to play:
- Lay down the heavy plastic sheeting on a smooth clean grassy area.
- Turn on the hose so that the plastic sheeting is continuously bathed in a stream of water.
- Have the kids form a line and one-by-one let them slide on their bottoms, backs or stomachs.
Variations:
- If you have a grassy hill in your backyard, set up your Slip-N-Slide on the hill for some added fun and excitement and let the kids really slide! You’ll probably have some adults sneaking in on the fun too!
- Try using the slip-n-slide as part of any wet-n-wild relay race.

Splat! Tag
There’s no doubt whose been tagged in this game! The big wet splat mark is a dead give away. Lots of refreshing fun to be had by all.

- A big soft sponge (like the kind you use to wash a car).
- Buckets of water.
How to play:
- Choose one kid to be “IT”.
- Have the other kids spread out over the play area.
- When you say “Go!,” “IT” tries to tag the other player with a wet sponge.
- Once a player is tagged, that player becomes the new “IT”.

Ice Cube Melt Relay
This is one of the coolest (or “iciest”) water games for kids!

Type: Water Relay Games for Kids
What You’ll Need:
- 1 ice cube per team (the ice cubes should be the same size).
How to play:
- Divide the kids into two equal teams.
- Give each team an ice cube.
- The first player on each team holds and rubs the ice cube until their hands get too cold.
- Then they pass it to the next kid on their team, and so on, until the ice cube is completely melted.
- The first team to completely melt their ice cube wins the game.

Water Relay Race
How many times have you heard someone say “Use your head”. Well what could be more fun then kids water games where you get to really use your head!
Style: Competitive
Type: Outdoor Water Relay Games for Kids
What You’ll Need:
- 1 large tin can (#10) or plastic container for each team
- A ruler
- Materials for an obstacle course (i.e.: things to climb over or under, walk through, anything that can be done with one hand since the other one will be holding the can)
How to play:
- Set up the obstacle course.
- Fill both cans with equal amounts of water (use a ruler to measure the distance of the water from the top of the can).
- Divide the kids into two teams.
- Have the first player from each team place a can on top of their head.
- On the word, “Go!,” they must negotiate the obstacle course holding the can on their head, then return to the start line and pass the can off to the next kid in line
- The game continues like this until each kid has had a chance to run the obstacle course.
- After all the team members have run the course, the team with the most water left in their can wins. If the two teams have the same amount of water, then the team that finished first wins.

“Leaking” Relay Race
When you play this water game for kids why don’t you get them all singing, “There’s a Hole in My Bucket?”
Style: Competitive

What You’ll Need:
- 1 cup with a hole in the bottom for each team
- 1 bucket (1/2 gallon) of water for each team
- 1 empty bucket (1/2 gallon) for each team
- 2 lengths of rope to mark the start and finish lines
How to play:
- Divide into two teams.
- Place the two buckets filled with water at the start line and the empty bucket at the finish line.
- Have each team line up at the start line.
- On the word, “Go!,” the first player on each team must fill her leaky cup with water from the bucket, then place the leaking cup over her head and run to the finish line and pour the remaining water from the cup into the bucket, then run back to the start line and hand the cup off to the next player.
- The game continues like this until each kid has had a turn.
- When both teams are finished, the team with the most water in their bucket wins.

Raindrops Relay Game
This water game for kids is similar to the one above, except this time the leaky container is carried over the heads of their teammates instead of their own heads.
Style: Competitive
Type: Outdoor Water Relay Games for Kids
What You’ll Need:
- 2 buckets per team, one filled with water
- 1 plastic baggie per team
How to play:
- Divide the kids into two groups and have them line up sitting down, one in front of the other, so they are facing the back of the person in front of them.
- Place a bucket filled with water behind the last kid in each line. Place an empty bucket (mark the half way line) in front of the first kid in each line.
- Put a bunch of pin holes in each team’s plastic baggie and give them to the first kid in each line.
- On the word, “Go!,” the first kid takes the baggie to the bucket at the end of the line, fills it with water and carries it to the front bucket. But here’s the catch — she must carry it over the heads of her teammates. When she gets to the bucket she dumps what water if left in the baggie into the bucket.
- The game continues like this until each kid has had a turn.
- The team that gets the most water into the front bucket wins.

Soggy Pants Relay
We all know had hard it is to get a wet bathing suit on and off. This water game for kids requires the players to do the same with a pair of soaking wet sweatpants!
Style: Competitive

What You’ll Need:
- 2 large pairs of sweatpants
- 2 buckets of water
- 2 lengths of rope to mark the playing area
How to play:
- Divide the kid into two teams and give each team a pair of really big sweatpants.
- Mark the playing area with the rope.
- On the word, “Go!,” the first player on each team must completely soak the pants in the bucket of water. Then they must put them on as fast as possible, run to the end of the course, turn around and run back to the start line, and peel of the pants.
- The next teammate must dunk the pants into the bucket to get them really soaked again before running the course.
- The game continues like this until each kid has completed the course.
- The first team to finish wins.

Sponge Relay Race
Instead of a leaky bucket, this water game for kids, requires that a sponge but used to transport water from one location to another.
Style: Competitive

What You’ll Need:
- 2 buckets per team
- 1 large sponge per team
- 2 lengths of rope to mark both ends of the course
How to play:
- Divide the kid into two teams and give each team a sponge.
- Mark both ends of the course with the rope. Place a bucket filled with water at the start line and an empty bucket at the other end for each team.
- On the word, “Go!,” the first player on each team must dunk their sponge into the bucket of water, run to the empty bucket at the other end, wring it out, run back to the start and pass the sponge of to the next kid in line.
- The game continues like this until each kid has completed the course.
- The team with the most water in their bucket wins.
Variations:
- For a really hot day have the kids carry the sponge on the head as they race for the bucket at the other end of the course. This can be done with hands or without hands! For the without hands option any kid who drops the sponge has to start over again and re-dunk the sponge.

Sponge Throw
A splashing good time will be had by all with this fun water game for kids.
Style: Competitive
Type: Water Games for Kids
What You’ll Need:
- A bucket for each player plus two empty “team” buckets
- 12 small kitchen sponges (6 for each team)
- Water
How to play:
- Divide the kids into two teams and have each team stand in a single file line, one behind the other.
- The first kid in each line is the Thrower and all the rest of the kids are Catchers.
- Each Thrower has a bucket of water with six sponges in it and stands about four feet in front of his team with his back to them.
- Each catcher has an empty bucket.
- On the word, “Go!,” each the thrower takes a wet sponge from his bucket and throws it backward over his head.
- The catchers must try to catch the sponges in their buckets without breaking rank (i.e.: stepping out of line) if possible.
- At the end of each round (i.e.: when each thrower has thrown all six of their sponges) the thrower brings the team’s bucket to each catcher so that she can wring out any sponges she has caught. The thrower also collects the wrung out sponges for the next round.
- The throwers go back to the front of the line and prepare for another round.
- At the end of three rounds the team with the most water in their “team” bucket wins.

Style: Competitive

What You’ll Need:
- A small bucket for each kid plus two larger team buckets (but not too large)
- A kiddie pool or large container of the water source
How to play:
- Mark both ends of the course with the rope (about 25 feet apart).
- Divide the kid into two teams and give each kid a bucket.
- Have each team line up in a straight line from the start line to the finish line.
- On the word, “Go!,” the player on each team who’s closest to the water source scoops up a bucketful of water, turns to the kid next in line and pours the water into his bucket. Then this player turns and does the same, and so on down the line.
- Until the last kid pours whatever water is left into the team’s bucket at the finish line.
- The game continues like this until one team fills their bucket.
- The first team to fill their bucket wins.
Variations:
- Give the kids a ladles, cups, bowls, pie plates, or any other type of container that fit your party theme

Water & Paper Fashion Show
Clear the runway and get the judges ready for the wacky water game for kids.

What You’ll Need:
- An assortment of colorful cloth towels or paper towels (the fancy decorated ones)
- 2 buckets of water
How to play:
- Divide the kids into teams of two.One will be the fashion designer and the other will be the model.
- Using only wet cloth towels or wet paper towels have each designer create her own masterpiece.
- Give awards for creativity, color, and most humorous. After the show, make sure you offer prizes for the “CLEANEST” runways. And make it clear that everyone definitely has a chance to win a prize.
