What You’ll Need:

  • A volleyball or badminton net (or tie a rope between to trees)
  • 2 old sheets (4 players) or 2 large towels (2 players)

How to play:

  1. Set up the volleyball net.
  2. Divide the kid into two teams and have each team stand on either side of the net.
  3. Give each team a bed sheet. Have each team surround their sheet on all sides and hold it open.
  4. Put a water balloon in one team’s sheet and have them try to flip it over the net. If the players do a count down (“one, two, three.. Up!) to each toss it really help!
  5. The other team must try to catch the water balloon in their sheet and flip it back.
  6. If one team misses, drops or breaks the balloon the other team gets a point.

Variations:

  • For an extra challenge play a variation of the game by putting multiple water balloons in the sheet at one time.

Pass the Water Balloon

This is sort of like game “Pass the Orange, but with water balloons. It’s lots more fun on a hot day, too!

Style: Competitive

Type: Water Balloon Games

What You’ll Need:

  • Water balloons Wet N Wild Water Balloon Games (small thin balloons, not regular balloons) and a place to fill them up
  • Something to mark the beginning and end of the course (e.g.: rope, soda bottles, etc.)

How to play:

  1. Divide the kids into team of two.
  2. Mark the beginning and the end of the course.
  3. On the word “Go!,” the first player on each team puts a water balloon under his chin, races to the end of the course and back.
  4. When he gets back to his team, he has to pass the water balloon to the next player without using his hands
  5. If the balloon breaks, the player has to get a new balloon and start over.
  6. If the balloon falls but doesn’t break, the player has to pick it up, put it back under his chin without using his hands, and keep going.
  7. The first team to finish wins.

What You’ll Need:

  • A container to hold the filled water balloons

Water Balloon Jug Toss

This game is played just like the water balloon toss above except the players use scoops to throw and catch the balloons. These scoops are very simple and cheap to make. Just save your old bleach bottles!

What You’ll Need:

  • Water balloons Wet N Wild Water Balloon Games (small thin balloons, not regular balloons) and a place to fill them up (make sure you have some extras)
  • A container to hold the filled water balloons
  • Empty Bleach Bottles
  • Water Balloons
  • Scissors

How to play:

  1. Cut the bottoms out of the bleach bottles.
  2. Make the openings a bit larger by cutting out a sloped shaped piece so the bottle resembles a scoop. Remove the bottle cap and discard.
  3. Divide the players into teams of two and give each team a water balloon and a jug scoop. Line the teams up an equal distance apart.
  4. Have the players use the scoops to toss the water balloons to their partners. Any catcher that makes a successful catch takes one step back.
  5. The teams keep tossing the water balloons back and forth (using their scoops) having the “catcher” take one step back for each successful catch. Any team that drops or breaks their balloon is out.

  • 2 baskets (or other containers to hold the water balloons)
  • 2 large pairs of trousers (sweat pants work well)

How to play:

  1. Divide the players into two teams.
  2. Give each team a basket of water balloons, and a large pair of sweat pants.
  3. Have each team choose one person in their group to wear the sweat pants. The rest of the team will help stuff them with water balloons.
  4. On the word “Go!,” each team begins to stuff water balloons into their volunteer’s pants being careful not to pop them.
  5. After the allotted period of time, both teams must stop stuffing their volunteers (or when the kids run out of water balloons).
  6. The team with the most successfully stuffed balloons wins. This isn’t necessarily the team that used up all their balloons. A team that hurries and breaks some balloons along the way could finish first, but still lose.
  7. Next take a final tally by having one kid from each team carefully remove and count all the un-popped balloons. The team with the most un-popped balloon wins.

Variations:

  • As a reward to the winning team let them toss their balloons at the other team

  • Two containers to hold the filled water balloons. Make sure the container don’t have any sharp edges.

Water Balloon “Cold Potato”

This is the outdoor summertime version of that old favorite kids game, “Hot Potato”.

Style: Competitive

Type: Water Balloon Games

What You’ll Need:

  • Water balloons Wet N Wild Water Balloon Games (small thin balloons, not regular balloons) and a place to fill them up
  • A container to hold the filled water balloons

How to play:

  1. Bring a good supply of water balloons to the play area.
  2. Have the kids sit in a circle (adjust the spacing according the age of the players) and pass the balloon from kid to kid. But here’s the catch — the balloon isn’t pass around the circle as in the traditional “hot potato”. It’s tossed across the circle.
  3. If a player fails to catch the balloon, or it breaks that they’re out.
  4. So the game doesn’t get out of hand, any player who intentionally tries to make a balloon explode in another player’s hand by throwing it hard instead of tossing is called out.
  5. The last kid left in the game (even if soaked) is the winner.

Variations:

  • If a balloon breaks, everyone who gets wet is out

Water Balloon “Drip”

Don’t be a Drip — Cool off in the fun summertime game that really isn’t about winning or losing. It’s how much fun you have cooling off!

Style: Non-competitive

What You’ll Need:

  • Balloons (regular balloons — not thin small water balloons) and a place to fill them up (fill the balloons as you need them)
  • A safety pin

How to play:

  1. Before you inflate a balloon, poke a small hole in it using a safety pin.
  2. Then fill it with water and tie the end to create a “time bomb” with a slow leak.
  3. Players sit (or stand) in a circle and pass the balloon around the circle.
  4. When the balloon runs out of water start another one going around the circle.
  5. You can even have several balloons going around at one time.

Variations:

  • If you want to play this as a competitive game just add to the rules that anyone holding the balloon when it runs out of water (or if it breaks) is out.

Water Balloon “Splat”

Kids love to see things go “splat” (pumpkins, eggs, water balloons, etc.) So line them up and let kids see who can make the biggest splat.

Style: Competitive

What You’ll Need:

  • Water balloons Wet N Wild Water Balloon Games (small thin balloons, not regular balloons) and a place to fill them up (make sure you have enough for each kid plus some extras)
  • A container to hold the filled water balloons
  • A paved or concrete surface like a driveway
  • Chalk
  • A tape measure

How to play:

  1. When you fill the balloon try to make them all the same size. Size does matter for the game!
  2. Have each kid takes a turn holding a water balloon high above his head. Then have him throw it firmly on the pavement. The idea is to try to make to biggest wet mark possible.
  3. Once there’s a wet mark, quickly outline it with chalk, put the kid’s initials by it and measure the size of the “Splat” at its widest point.
  4. The kid that makes the biggest splat wins.

What You’ll Need:

  • A container to hold the filled water balloons
  • 2 lengths of rope to mark the start and finish lines

How to play:

  1. Use the rope to make two parallel lines on the ground at least 20 feet apart.
  2. Divide the players into two equal teams and place two piles of balloon at the start line.
  3. On the word “Go!,” the first kid on each team picks up a balloon and runs to the finish line. Then they must sit on their balloon and pop it and run back to the start line.
  4. The game continues like this until every kid on both teams has crossed had a chance.
  5. The first team to finish popping all their balloon is the winning team.

Style: Competitive

What You’ll Need:

  • A container to hold the filled water balloons
  • 1 length of rope to mark the middle of the play area

How to play:

  1. Use the rope to divide the play area.
  2. Divide the kids up into teams and give them each a basket with an equal number of water balloons.
  3. On the word, “Go!,” each team must try to hit the opposing team with their water balloons.
  4. They must stay on their teams side of the play area. (i.e.: no crossing over the line to get a better shot)
  5. If someone gets hit they have to sit out. But in 60 seconds they get to join back in the fun.
  6. Play until the kids run out of water balloons.
