Freeze Tag
This is one of the many variations of the outdoor kid game “Tag.”
Style: Competitive
Type: Outdoor Kid Games
What You’ll Need:
- A large open play area
How to play:
- Select one kid to be “It” (the birthday kid is a good choice).
- “It” runs around trying to tag the other players.
- Any kid who is tagged must freeze where they are and stand as still as possible.
- He can’t move until another kid unfreezes (tags) him.
- Whoever is tagged twice becomes the next “It”.
- When the kid playing “It” changes any kid who is frozen can unfreeze.

Red Light, Green Light
Kids love to be “sneaky”. The object of this outdoor kid game is to move as quickly as you can but don’t get caught. (Sounds kind of sneaky, doesn’t it?)
Style: Non-competitive
Type: Outdoor Kid Games
What You’ll Need:
- A large play area
- Chalk or two long lengths of rope
How to play:
- Use either chalk or rope to make two parallel lines on the ground at least 20 feet apart.
- Choose one person to be the “police officer” and have him stand in front of one line.
- The rest of the kids stand behind the opposite line.
- The game starts with the police officer facing the other plays.
- Then he turns his back to the other players and yells, “Green Light!” and counts to five out loudly as quickly as he can.
- The other players must run or walk quickly toward the police officer while he’s counting.
- When the police office has counted to, three he shouts, “Red Light!” and all players must freeze.The police office turns around quickly to catch any players who are moving. Anyone catch moving must return to the start line.
- The game continues until one player crosses the while the police office has his back turned.
- That player becomes the police office.
Variations:
- Have the police officer count to five instead of three.
- Increase the distance between the parallel lines.
- Supply the kid’s with the prop like a police officers badge or hat.
- Give the police officer a whistle to blow instead of shouting “Stop!”
- For a quieter game have the police officer wave a flag (or scarf) when he wants everyone to freeze.

Dress-Up Race
Kids love to dress up and this outdoor kid game will see just how fast they can put on and take off a funny mismatched set of clothes.
Style: Competitive
Type: Outdoor Kid Games
What You’ll Need:
- 2 small suitcases (tote bags or paper shopping bags will work, too!).
- All sorts of funny mismatched clothing (include stuff for the feet and head, and don’t forget to put in a few accessories, sports apparel and costume items).
- A large play area.
- Something to mark the start and finish lines (chalk, masking tape or two long lengths of rope will do).
How to play:
- For the start and goal lines, make two parallel lines on the ground about 25 feet apart.
- Pack each suitcase with an equal amount of funny mismatched clothing.
- Divide the kids into two equal teams.
- Have the teams line up at the start line.
- The first player in line from each team run towards the goal line carrying a suitcase. When they reach the goal line, they have to open the suitcase and put on everyone inside it, pick up the empty suitcase and run back to the start line, take off all the clothes, put them back in the suitcase, close it up, and pass it to the next player inline.
- The next players in line repeat this until everyone has gone.
- The team that finishes the race first wins the game.

Down, Down
This great outdoor kid game put quite a unique twist on a friendly game of catch!
Style: Competitive
Type: Outdoor Kid Games
What You’ll Need:
- A tennis ball
- A large play area
How to play:
- Divide the kids into groups of two and have them spread out so they have enough room to play catch.
- Have the pair of kids throw the ball back and forth continuously until someone drops it.
- When a kid drops the ball you say, “down on one knee.”
- That kid has to drop to one knee and continue to play the game like that. The kids continue to throw the ball back and forth. If the same kid drops it again, you say, “down on both knees”.
- The next time you say, “down on one elbow.” After that, you say, “down on both elbows,” and finally, “down on your chin.” If the same kid drops the ball again, he’s out.
- The real “catch” is that all the kids must stay in the position they’re in to catch and throw the ball.
- The game continues until each pair has a winner.
- You can also have playoff rounds until you have one final winner.
Variations:
- If the kids catch the ball in any of the down positions, they can reverse back through the positions with each subsequent catch until they are standing again.

Dragon Tail Tag
Get all those little “Dragons” roaring with this exciting outdoor kid game!
Style: Competitive
Type: Outdoor Kid Games
What You’ll Need:
- A large open area clear of trees or other obstacles
- 2 bandanas or scarves
How to play:
- Divide the kids into teams of about four to six.
- Have the members of each team line up, one behind the other. Next, have the kids make a chain by having each one hold onto the waist (or shoulders) of the kid in front (they can also link elbows). Once the game starts they can’t break the chain (i.e.: let go).
- The first kid in line is the dragon’s head, and the last kid is the dragon’s tail.
- The last kid in line tucks a bandana in the waistband of his pants or in his back pocket. This is the “flag.”
- On the word, “Go!,” the head of each dragon must try to catch the tail of the other dragon without becoming unlinked. To make the game even more fun, encourage your little dragons to roar!
- The team that manages to get the other team’s flag wins. Then the dragon heads move to the back of the line and the second kid in line becomes the dragon head and the game starts again.

Loose At The Zoo
Kid’s love the zoo. So get their imaginations going with this great outdoor kid game that lets them imagine they are zoo animals.
Style: Competitive
Type: Outdoor Kid Games
What You’ll Need:
- A large outdoor play area
- Index cards (3 ½ X 5 ½ inches)
- Pictures of zoo animal that will fit on index cards. (Cut out of magazines, coloring books, or hand drawn).
- Glue
- Chalk or two long lengths of rope
How to play:
- Glue pictures of zoo animals on index cards.
- Make one card for each kid.
- Use either chalk or rope to make two parallel lines on the ground at least 20 feet apart.
- Select one kid to be the Zoo Keeper. The rest of the kids will be the Zoo Animals.
- Have the Zoo Keeper stand in between the lines while the other kids stand behind one of the lines.
- Give each Zoo Animal an index card which shows them what animal they should pretend to be. Tell them not to let the Zoo Keeper know which animal they are.The Zoo Keeper patrols the Zoo (play area), walking back and forth between the two lines making sure there are no loose Zoo Animals. At the same time the Zoo Keeper must shout out names of Zoo Animals.
- Players whose cards match the animals called out must run to the opposite side of the play area before being tagged by the Zoo Keeper. Any kid caught must freeze instantly, and all the other loose animals run around him for a more challenging race.
- Any kid that makes it to the other side goes back to the starting line for another game.
- The game is over when all the animals have been frozen.
- The last Zoo Animal to be caught is the winner.

Whipped Cream Bubble Gum Race
This one is very messy (and also very funny so it’s worth the mess) so it’s best to plan this one as an outdoor kid game!
Style: Competitive
Type: Outdoor Kid Games
What You’ll Need:
- Paper plates for (1 for each kid).
- Bubble gum (1 for each kid) – Make sure you get bubble gum and not just chewing gum!
- Whipped cream in a can (enough for 1 heaping plateful for each kid).
How to play:
- Put a piece of bubble gum (unwrapped) on a plate and swirl the whipped cream over it until the bubble gum is completely covered.
- Then have each kid search through the whipped cream to find the bubble gum.
- Here’s the catch, when you say “GO!” the players will have their hands tied behind their backs. This means they must dive face first into the whipped cream to look for the bubble gum.
- Once they find the bubble gum, they must chew it and blow a bubble.
- The first kid to blow a bubble wins.

Red Devil
This outdoor kid game will really get their adrendaline pumping!
Style: Competitive
Type: Outdoor Kid Games
What You’ll Need:
- A house or other type of building that the kids can run completely around the perimeter.
How to play:
- Determine a starting line or a “home base” that you can touch.
- Choose a kid to be the Red Devil.
- Everyone starts in the front of the house.
- To start the game, have the Red Devil face the other players and declare, “I’m thinking of a type of (fill in the blank) (i.e.: car, sports team, flower, etc.)
- Then all the other players begin to shout out what they think the Red Devil might be thinking of.
- When the Red Devil hears the correct answer, she calls out the players name that guesses correctly.
- Then the Red Devil and the player who guessed correctly take off running around the house in opposite directions.
- The first person to make it back to the starting line (or home base) becomes the Red Devil. You can also reverse this rule and make it the first person back to the starting line is not the Red Devil.

Comic Paper Race
Turn your old Sunday newspaper comics into an awesome outdoor kid game! Now that’s recycling at its best!
Style: Competitive
Type: Outdoor Kid Games
What You’ll Need:
- A large play area
- A few comic sections from your local Sunday Newspaper
- Clear contact paper or index cards and glue
- 2 cardboard boxes
How to play:
1. Cut out a bunch of popular cartoon characters from the Sunday comics. You should have two of the same character for each kid.
2. So they will be sturdy enough to last through the game, glue the cut-outs on an index card or cover them with clear contact paper.
3. Place one of each character into two separate cardboard boxes.
4. Use either chalk or rope to make a finish line on the ground about 20 feet apart from the start line. You can also make the line out of the Sunday comics, too!
5. Have the kids line up side by side, facing the finish line.
6. Without looking have each kid pick a character from the first box.
7. Next have the first kid in line choose a character from the second box and show it to the group.
8. The kid whose character matches the one just picked gets to take one step toward the finish line in a fashion appropriate for their character (Garfield could crawl and meow, Fred Flintstone could shout “Yabba-Dabba-Doo!”)
9. The kid picked the character returns it to the box, and the next kid in line chooses one. Bring the box to the kids so that they don’t lose their places.
10.The first kid to cross the finish line is the winner.
Variations:
- For a bigger selection of characters buy different coloring books instead of using the Sunday comics.
- You could also have the kids color them before the race.

Egg On A Spoon
Now here’s a classic outdoor kid game. The egg on a spoon race!
Style: Competitive
Type: Outdoor Kid Games
What You’ll Need:
- Teaspoons for each kid
- Hard boiled eggs (or plastic eggs like those used for Easter decorations – put a little trinket inside them to weigh them down a bit)
How to play:
- Use either chalk or rope to make two parallel lines on the ground at least 20 feet apart.
- Have the kids line up at the starting line and give each one an egg and a spoon.
- On the word, “Go!”, the kids have to run from the start line to the finish line with their eggs on their spoons without dropping them (They can’t touch the egg with their hands!). Anyone who drops their egg must start again.
- The kid that makes it to the finish first is the winner.
Variations:
- For very young kids just see how far the kids can make it without dropping their eggs.
- Partner up the kids and have the first one run from the start line to the finish line and the second kid run from finish line to the start line. The team

Octopus

Style: Non-competitive

What You’ll Need:
- A large play area.
- Something to mark the both ends of the play area (chalk, masking tape or two long lengths of rope will do).
How to play:
- Use either chalk or rope to make two parallel lines on the ground at least 20 feet apart.
- Select one kid to be the Octopus and have her stand in the area between the lines (the Ocean).
- Have the other players (the Little Fish) stand behind one of the lines.
- Each of the Little Fish must try to reach the other side without getting tagged by the Octopus.
- To start the game, the Octopus yells, “Swim!” and all the Little Fish run across the Ocean to safety.
- Any Little Fish who is caught stay with the Octopus and becomes a Tentacle.
- The next round begins when the Octopus yells, “Swim” and all the Little Fish run across the Ocean, trying to avoid the Octopus and her Tentacles.
- The game continues until all the Little Fish are rounded up.
Variations:
- To make the game last longer, let the Tentacles become Little Fish again once they’ve tagged someone. Play until all the kids are too tired to run anymore.
- For young kids don’t make the Ocean too wide or they will tire quickly.
- Instead of yelling out, “Swim!” the Octopus can call out a color and any Little Fish wearing that color must crossing the Ocean (or a type of clothing, a type of pet, etc).

Banana Bowling Race
This outdoor kid game will have them racing to see who’s the “top” banana!
Style: Competitive
Type: Outdoor Kid Games
What You’ll Need:
- A large play area
- Something to mark the start and finish lines (chalk, masking tape or two long lengths of rope will do).
- Two bananas
- A length of string for each kid
- 1 ping pong ball for each team
How to play:
- Use either chalk or rope to make two parallel lines on the ground about 20 feet apart.
- Tie a string to each of the bananas (one for each kid). Leave enough string so that each kid can tie the string around their waist and have their banana dangle almost to the ground.
- Divide the kids into two teams and have each group line up at the finish line.
- When you say “Go!”, the first two kids try to hit their ping pong ball with their bananas across the finish line. What makes this game really interesting is the kids are not allowed to use their hands or feet, just their bananas!.
- The game continues like this until each kid has had a turn.
- The team that finishes the race first wins the game.

Crossing The Chasm

What You’ll Need:
- A bench, log or beam about five feet long to serve as the bridge. It should be on the narrow side. If it’s too wide it wouldn’t be much of a challenge.
How to play:
- Divide the kids into two teams and have each team line up at opposite ends of the bridge (i.e.: the bench).
- On the word, “Go!,” each team has to cross the chasm, while passing each other on the bridge.
- Anyone who falls off must go to the end of their team’s line to try again.
- The first team to successfully get all their member across the chasm, wins.

Pass The Orange

- Two oranges
How to play:
- Divide the kids into two teams and have each team line up one behind the other.
- Have the first kid in each line tuck an orange under her chin and hold it there (no hands, just chins and necks!)
- On the word, “Go!” the kids must pass the orange from neck to neck using only their chins and necks.
- The team that gets the orange to the last neck in their line first without dropping the orange wins.

Minefield
This outdoor kid game requires teamwork and good communication skills. It can also get really loud.
Style: Competitive
Type: Outdoor Kid Games
What You’ll Need:
- 2 blindfolds
- A large play area
- Obstacles (any number of moveable objects like balls, cardboard boxes, lawn chairs, etc.)
How to play:
- Define the boundaries of the play area or the “minefield”.
- Divide the kids into teams of two and then have them choose partners from within their team.
- One partner will be blindfolded at one end of the field. The other partner must stand at the opposite end of the field and try to talk their partner through the minefield so that they don’t run into any of the obstacles.
- If the blindfolded partner touches an obstacle she must stand still for ten seconds.
- When a player gets to the other side, they remove the blindfold and pass it to the next player in line.
- The game continues like this until all the pairs from each team have had a chance to play.
- The team that gets all its member through the minefield first, wins.

“The Blob” Tag
Here’s a twist on a classic game of tag your “it”. Each kid tries to avoid being tagged by the ever-growing and dividing “blob”. Just like in the movie The Blob.
Style: Competitive

What You’ll Need:
- A large play area
How to play:
- Choose one kid to be The Blob.
- When the game begins all the other kids will run away and try not to get tagged by The Blob.
- Whenever a kid is tagged by The Blob they must join hands with The Blob forming a larger blob. Together they continue to chase the others.
- Once The Blob is made up of four people, it splits into two blobs (two pairs). Each blob continues to chase the other kids.
- The last kid caught will become The Blob and the game starts all over again. Or the last kid to be caught is the winner.

“Flour Bomb” Tag
This is a great variation on the traditional outdoor kid game “Tag”.
Style: Competitive
Type: Outdoor Kid Games
What You’ll Need:
- Dark t-shirts (black or navy work well)
- Nylon stockings (knee-hi’s are cheaper)
- Flour
- Damp towel to clean off the flour marks between rounds
How to play:
- Fill the nylons with flour and tie the end so it forms a ball shape.
- Choose a person to be the referee and designate a jail area.
- Give each kid a dark t-shirt and a flour bomb.
- On the word, “Go,” the kids must try to get the each other out by throwing and hitting each with their flour bombs.
- Any player hit by a flour bomb is out. (You’ll know who’s out because there will be a white flour mark on their dark t-shirt.)
- The referee must keep track of those players who’ve been hit, call them out, and send them to the jail area.
Variations:
- A variation of this game is “capture the flag”. Divide your guests into two teams. Each team has a flag at opposite ends of the playing field. Each team tries to get their opponents flag without being tagged.
