Celebrate the summer by throwing an awesome kid’s luau party that children of all ages will enjoy! These celebrations take in the relaxation of long, summer days and warm, starry nights. Ideally, you’ll want to have the festivities outdoors, but this isn’t always within your control. If the weather can’t be trusted, make sure you have a backup plan in mind. You may want to have your basement or family room decorated if the weather doesn’t cooperate!
A perk to having a kids luau party is that you can be creative and get many of your decorations from supplies around the home. For starters, gather up brightly colored streamers, beach towels, bathing suits and beach-themed postcards. Use these items to hang around the party space. And now is a great time to dig out old bathing suits that your kids no longer fit in! It will be fun to look back and see the toddler sizes they used to wear.
Other cheap luau party decorations include flower leis, green Easter grass, silk flowers, tiki torches and bunches of fruit. Pineapples, bananas and coconuts double up as centerpieces and treats for your guests. When lunch or dinner is served, slice up the fruit and add it to your existing fruit platters. Also cut out flower shapes using brightly colored construction paper and hang them around the space. Arrange outdoor lights and lanterns, as well as hula hoops for the “rings of fire.”
If you have shells or starfish from previous vacations, use them as centerpieces. Visit a local travel agency and see if they have fun posters to donate to your celebration. Colored balloons make great festive decorations, and hula-style music can be played in the background to set the stage. If you don’t have this type of music on hand, download some tunes online.
Once the zone is decorated, you’ll need to plan for the games and activities! Set out beach buckets for a bucket toss or let kids engage in a hula hoop contest. When you send out the kids luau party invitations, ask everyone to bring a pair of flip flops to be decorated using glitter glue and beads. Set up a game of sand volleyball or let kids make art projects using colored sand. Guests will also love making their very own tropical flowers by using rolled up tissue paper placed on green pipe cleaners.
For kids luau party games, play a round of Limbo to some Hawaiian music. Or, learn an easy hula routine and teach the kids the dance. Make sure you have grass skirts to make the dancing authentic! Then let your guests dance on their own to some music, while you get together delicious foods such as punches, platters of pineapple and mangoes, and mini hamburgers off the grill. If the weather permits, get out the kiddie pools and fill them with water for pool fun.
Even after all the fun, you’ll still want to leave your guests with something more to remember the occasion with! There are plenty of luau party supplies for kids that are also great for favors, including leis and grass hula skirts. These items are inexpensive and can be purchased in bulk for lower prices. Another great idea is to purchase plastic cups with straws and personalize them with the kids’ names using paint markers. Inflatable beach balls and squirt guns are also budget-friendly and are a blast for young children to play with. Don’t forget to use kids luau party ideas in your thank you notes as well.
