The advantage to having a kids garden party is that you can incorporate any outdoor activity while teaching kids about the local environment. Even parents can learn a thing or two about caring for the planet and may be inspired to plant flowers or trees on their own time. Garden parties are most popular during the spring and summer months when it’s possible to plan outdoor activities. So grab your gardening gloves and empty pots and let’s get started planning the best outdoor celebration!
Start your planning by mailing out kids garden party invitations. This will let everyone know the theme of your celebration and also gives the chance to communicate with your guests. Indicate whether they should bring something special to the celebration or if they should wear casual clothes if you’ll be playing outdoors. Make your own invites by downloading them online and personalizing them with the necessary details. Or, cut out the shapes of flowers or bumblebees on construction paper, and write the details on the opposite side.
A kids garden party has plenty of opportunities for games and activities that can be done outdoors. For example, give each child a small pot and let him or her plant an item of choice. Have an assortment of flowers, fruits or vegetable seeds to choose from. Make sure to include instructions on how to care for the plant or vegetable. Not only is this a fun activity, but it serves as a party favor as well. All you need are packets of seeds, potting soil and individual planters.
If the crowd is young and you don’t want them to be working in dirt, you can still send home favors that will make a difference. Provide packets of seeds and attach a quick thank you note or saying on the outside. Other kids garden party favors include gardening gloves, plastic gardening tools or a small potted plant that can be re-planted in their yard at home. Or, try plastic bug nets or bug collectors if the budget allows. Although more expensive, these are great favors that your guests will continue to use.
To keep guests entertained, have fun games and easy garden party ideas for kids, such as a bug hunt. Place plastic bugs around the backyard and let the kids find them using plastic nets and bug catchers. You can also have the kids decorate birdhouses and fill them with bird seed. Or, have fun making a caterpillar using colored pom-poms and squiggly eyes.
Whether you’re having the event indoors or outdoors, you’ll need a colorful collection of kids garden party decorations. Don’t think you need to spend a lot of money either, as many of the supplies can be taken from the home. Place silk flowers in plastic vases and use them for centerpieces. Hang up outdoor lights in festive colors and arrange streamers from trees and bushes. For added fun, make your own centerpieces of flowers by using colored lollipops placed in clear plastic vases lined with Skittles or M&Ms.
If you have old flowered tablecloths sitting in your attic, its great to use them to cover the tables for this type of event. Or, wrap the tables in white paper and let your guests sponge paint them using flower-shaped sponges. Have a garden tea party theme for the meal and use plastic tea cups and small plates. Serve fun finger foods such as cookies, tarts and breads. Dish up flavored iced teas or punches and let the girls wear flowered straw hats and elegant white gloves. Fruit bowls and veggie platters are other great ideas that will fill everyone’s tummies! Don’t forget to finish off your garden party for kids with a colorful flower shaped cake!
