Catch that Balloon

Here’s one of many balloon games that’s perfect for a young kid’s birthday party!

Style: Non-competitive

Type: Balloon Games

What You’ll Need:

  • One balloon (but have more ready — remember they pop!).

How to play:

  1. Have the kids gather around you.
  2. Toss the balloon in the air and call out one kid’s name.
  3. That kid tries to catch the balloon before it touches the ground.
  4. If the kid succeeds, he gets to toss the balloon and call the next name.

Variations:

  • For very young kids an adult should toss the balloon and call out the names the whole game.

Balloon Race

It’s easy to turn many simple games into balloon games. For example, take a any basic kid’s race, add balloons and you’ve got a challenging and very hilarious balloon game.

Style: Competitive / Non-competitive

Type: Balloon Games

What You’ll Need:

  • Two pieces of string or rope
  • A balloon for each player

How to play:

  1. Lay out the string on the floor to mark the start and finish lines.
  2. Divide the kids into two teams and give each kid a balloon.
  3. Have the kids hold their balloons between their legs and go from the start to the finish line without dropping the balloon.
  4. If they drop it, they have to go back to the start line and try again.
  5. When both teams have completed the course the game is over.

Variations:

  • Use two colors of balloon (One color for each team).

Match the Balloon

Here’s another of many balloon games that’s just right for a preschool kid’s birthday party!

Style: Non-competitive

Type: Balloon Games

What You’ll Need:

  • Music and a music player (e.g.: CD player or tape deck).

How to play:

  1. Have the kids sit in a circle.
  2. Pin a colored button on each kid.
  3. Put the colored balloons in the middle of the circle. One for each child.
  4. Start the music and have the kids walk around the balloons.
  5. When the music stops, call out a color. The child with that color button has to find the matching balloon and hold it up
  6. The game continues until each kid has a matching balloon.

Variations:

  • You can repeat colors as long as there are enough pairs for each player.

Sunny Balloon Burst

Balloon game or science project? Who cares? — this balloon game is great fun no matter what you call it. Just make sure everyone’s wearing sun screen!

Style: Competitive

Type: Balloon Games

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 balloon for each kid
  • 1 small magnifying glass per kid
  • A place in direct sunlight to play
  • Thumbtacks or string
  • A fence or clothes line (in the sun!)

How to play:

  1. Inflate all the balloons and attach them to a fence (or a clothes line) at kid height about one foot apart. Make sure the spot you choose is in direct sunlight.
  2. Have all the players sit or kneel in front of a balloon.
  3. On the count of three they must hold their magnifying glasses about three inches from their balloons.
  4. Make sure the sun is shining through the magnifying glasses onto their balloons.
  5. After a while a small bright dot will appear on their balloons.
  6. The kids must hold their magnifying glasses steady until the heat caused by the sun causes their balloons to pop.
  7. The first kid to pop a balloon wins
  8. But don’t stop the game until each kid has popped their balloon.

Balloon Pop “Surprise”

Balloon games that require the players to deliberately pop the balloons are exciting and always bring out lots of silly antics. So, it’s worth including at least one. The balloons used in this game can as used as decorations and party favors!

Style: Non-competitive

Type: Balloon Games

What You’ll Need:

  • Large balloons one for each kid.
  • Small individually wrapped candies, pieces of paper that have jokes written on them and a few that say “claim a prize” (there’s no limit on size with this option).

How to play:

  1. Push a small candy or a piece of paper into every balloon. Then blow them up and knot the ends.
  2. Spread all the balloon around the floor (one for each kid) or hang them from the ceiling.
  3. Let the kids know that each balloon has a surprise inside.
  4. Then on the word “Go!,” let the kids go wild grabbing, sitting on them and popping them to reveal their surprise. This can be great fun for young kids as long as they’re not frightened by the popping balloons. You can even put a small light-weight party favor in each balloon and use them to decorate the party area. Then at the end of the party, let each guest take a balloon and pop it.

Balloon Stuffing Race

This is one of the balloon games that is better suited for older kids. “Muscle Builders Race” is a similar balloon game (see below), and is a much better choice for younger kids.

Style: Competitive

Type: Balloon Games

What You’ll Need:

  • Lots of small balloons
  • 2 large shirts
  • 2 large pairs of pants
  • 1 long hat pin

How to play:

  1. Divide the players into two teams.
  2. Give each team a bag that contains a large shirt, a large pair of pants, and a bag of balloons.
  3. Have each team choose one person in their group to put on the clothes. The rest of the team will be blowing up the balloons. (Volunteer should have clothing that covers most of their skin. Popping balloon can really sting bare skin. Ouch!)
  4. On the word “Go!,” each team begins to blow up the balloon while their team’s volunteer puts on the large clothes.
  5. When the person is “dressed”, her teammates begin to stuff the inflated balloon in the shirt and pants as fast as they can. Yes, some balloons will pop in the frenzy, but that’s half the fun!
  6. After the allotted period of time, both teams must stop stuffing their volunteers.
  7. The team with the most balloons stuffed into their volunteer’s clothing wins.
  8. There’s no need to pull the balloons out to count them. Just use a long hat pin to pop each balloon while everyone counts.

Muscle Builders Race

This is a variation of the “Balloon Stuffing Race” above. This balloon game doesn’t require that any balloons be popped intentionally. But no doubt, there will be some “balloon casualties” in the playing of this game!

Style: Competitive

What You’ll Need:

  • Lots of small balloons (inflated).
  • 2 pairs of one-piece long johns.

How to play:

  1. Divide the players into two teams.
  2. Give each team a bag of small inflated balloons and a one-piece long john or any other simple jumpsuit (preferably something stretchy).
  3. Have each team choose one person in their group to be the Weakling. The rest of the team will be Personal Trainers.
  4. On the word “Go!,” each team of personal trainers must make their Weaklings grow instant muscles by stuffing as many balloons as they can, in 60 seconds, into their long underwear.
  5. After the allotted period of time, and both teams have stopped stuffing their Weaklings, remove and count the balloons for each time.
  6. The team whose Weakling has with the most muscles (i.e.: balloons), wins.

Balloon Stomp

You may want to plan this balloon game as an outdoor event so a stomping good time can be had be all!

Style: Competitive

Type: Balloon Games

What You’ll Need:

  • An inflated balloon for each kid.
  • String for each balloon.
  • Rubber bands for each balloon (optional).

How to play:

  1. Start by giving each kid a balloon with about 3 ft of string tied to it.
  2. Next have them tie the other end of the string around their ankle leaving about 12 inches or so between their foot and the balloon. You can also tie the string to a rubber band so the kids can slip the rubber band over their feet.
  3. Have everyone stand in a large open space.
  4. The object is to stomp on everyone else’s balloons and pop them.
  5. The last one with an un-popped balloon wins!

Variations:

  • Try attaching balloons to both ankles to make this game a little more interesting.

Balloon Hunt

Here’s a balloon games that requires teamwork!

Style: Competitive

Type: Balloon Games

What You’ll Need:

  • Balloons.
  • Beads (or pom-poms, buttons, Styrofoam packing peanuts, small pasta, etc.).
  • Soft rope.

How to play:

  1. Before you blow up the balloons, put a bead into each one balloon.
  2. Hide the balloons around the yard.
  3. Divide the kids into groups of two.
  4. To make it more challenging each pair of kids will have one set of hands and one set of feet tied together.
  5. On the word “Go!,” each pair of kids sets off trying to find as many balloon as they can. As soon as they find a balloon, they must pop it (no popping utilities allowed!) and collect the item(s) inside.
  6. The pair that collects the most items in the allotted time wins the game.

Balloon Catch

Here’s a simple balloon game where no one really wins. Kids just have lots of fun trying to remember their number and keep the balloon from hitting the ground.

Style: Non-competitive

Type: Balloon Games

What You’ll Need:

  • Several balloons (one may not last the whole game).
  • A piece of paper with a different number written on it for each kid.
  • Safety pins (one for each kid). If you use blank label paper you don’t need the pins!
  • Music and a music player (e.g.: CD player or tape deck)

How to Play:

  1. Have each kid select on a paper with a number on it and pin (or stick it) to his chest.
  2. The kid with the highest number is given a balloon.

  3. Start the music and have the kids dance to the music while passing the balloon around.
  4. When the music stops, the kid with the balloon has to throw it in the air and shout out one of the numbers.
  5. Whoever is wearing that number has to run and catch the balloon before it hits the floor.
  6. The game continues like this until everyone has had a chance to catch the balloon./li>

Bubble Butt

This is definitely one of those noisy balloon games — “butt” a popping good time will be had by all (and that’s a good trade off, if you ask me)!

What You’ll Need:

  • A chair and balloon for each kid.
  • String or tape loops (to keep the balloon from blowing off the chairs)

How to play:

  1. Line up a row of chairs on one side of the room. Put a balloon on each of the chairs.
  2. Have the kids sit in a row on the floor on the opposite side of the room.
  3. On the word “Go!,” the kids run to a chair and sit on the balloon. They must try to pop the balloon using only their body weight.
  4. Once they pop the balloon they must run back to their place on the floor.
  5. The first kid back is the winner.

Balloon Seize

This is one hilarious balloon game! It’s definitely worth putting on your balloon games list. Everyone will laugh themselves silly watching all the wild and wacky antics.

Style: Competitive

What You’ll Need:

  • 20 balloons

How to play:

  1. Blow up 20 balloons, place them on the floor.
  2. One at a time, give each kid two minutes to seize (pick up and hold) as many balloons as possible. No one can help them pick up balloons. The kids can hold the balloons any way they like (i.e.: between their legs, under their arms, in their teeth, in their clothing, etc.)
  3. After everyone has had a chance, the kid that “seized” the most balloons at the end of the allotted time wins.

Balloon & Bubble Gum Relay

Can you run and chew gum at this same time? This exciting balloon game will give everyone a chance to find out.

Style: Competitive

Type: Balloon Games

What You’ll Need:

  • Balloons (one for each team)
  • Bubblegum (individually wrapped pieces).
  • A large open area

How to play:

  1. Put a piece of gum inside each balloon, blow them up, and knot them.
  2. Mark the course (start and end lines).
  3. Put the balloons for each team at the end line.
  4. Divide the kids into teams and have them line up at the start line.On the word “Go!,” have the first two kids from each team crawl to the end line, and pop the balloon by sitting on it. Then they must find the gum, unwrap it, chew it, and blow a full size bubble. Once they’ve done that, they must run back, tag the next player’s hand.
  5. The game continues like this until everyone kid has had a turn.
  6. The first team to finish wins.

Balloon Keep It Up

“Parts is parts” (as the saying goes from a well known chicken commercial) and they’ll need all their body parts to play this crazy balloon game.

Style: Competitive

Type: Balloon Games

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 balloon for each team

How to play:

  1. Divide the kids into groups of four to five players.
  2. On the word “Go!,” each team must bounce their balloon back and forth. They must hit the balloon from the bottom, and it should always be hit upwards.
  3. Now here’s the catch — have one person (an adult) call out a body part and each kid must try to hit the balloon with that part of their body. Hand and foot are pretty easy, but head, knee, elbow, hips/butt get progressively more difficult (and let’s not forget funnier!).
  4. Any kid who lets the balloon hit the ground or hits it with the wrong body part is out.
  5. Have the teams continue playing until each team has a winner.
  6. Then have all the team winners form a final group for a play off round.
  7. The kid who lasts the longest is the winner.

Balloon Pop Relay

What could be better, a balloon game where the kids get to run around and pop balloons!

Style: Competitive

Type: Balloon Games

What You’ll Need:

  • Balloons (inflated)
  • Bag, basket or other type of container to hold the balloon.

How to play:

  1. Divide the kids into two teams and have the kids form two lines facing each other about 20 feet apart. Place a big bag of balloons in the middle between the two teams.
  2. On the word “Go!,” the first two kids from each team must race to the balloon bag, take one out and pop it as quickly as they can – they can sit on it, step on it, or pop it by any other means. Once the pop the balloon they race back and tag the next team member in their line.
  3. The game continues like this until every kid has had a turn. The team that finishes first (i.e.: has every player pop a balloon) is the winner.

Balloon Pass Relay Race

We’ve all heard the saying “you’re all thumbs”. “You’re all knees” is a more befitting saying for this balloon game.

What You’ll Need:

  • A balloon for each team

How to play:

  1. Divide the kids into two teams and have them stand in two single-file lines facing forward.
  2. Give the first kid on each team a balloon and have them place it between their knees.
  3. On the word “Go!,” the first kid on each team must turn around and face the next team member in line. The second kid must grab the balloon with her knees and turn to pass it on to the third team member, and so on.
  4. If the balloon falls to the ground or pops, the team must start over.
  5. The first team to successfully pass the balloon down the line, wins!

Googly Balloons

Expect the unexpected from this balloon game!

Style: Competitive

What You’ll Need:

  • Balloons (two more than the number of players)
  • Small marbles (two more than the number of players)

How to play:

  1. Put a small marble in each balloon, blow them up, and knot them. This will make the balloons move in unexpected ways (makes the games more challenging and of course more amusing!).
  2. Divide the kids into two teams and have each team stand in a separate area. Release to each team (toss the balloons in the air) one more balloon than each team has members (i.e.: team of four – toss up five balloons).
  3. Each team must try to keep all the balloons up in the air.
  4. The first team to let a balloon hit the ground loses.

Balloon Round Up

With a little imagination, this balloon game will have your cow hands jumping on their horses to round up their herds.

Style: Competitive

Type: Balloon Games

What You’ll Need:

  • 2 brooms
  • String to mark the course
  • 6 balloons (plus a few extra incase some pop)
  • Miscellaneous items for an obstacle course (e.g.: chairs, boxes, bushes, trees, etc.).

How to play:

  1. For this game you will need two brooms, a long string to mark your course, six balloons (and a few extra in case any should pop).
  2. Set up an obstacle course in your party area and mark the path of the obstacle course with string.
  3. Divide the kids into two teams and have each team line up at the starting line.
  4. Give the first kid on each team a broom and three balloons (use a different color for each team).
  5. On the word “Go!,” each kid must use the broom to herd their wild ponies (the balloons) through the obstacle course.
  6. If a balloon pops during a player’s turn, he must take a new balloon to the start line and begin again.
  7. Each player must herd their balloons through the entire course to complete their turn. The game continues like this until each kid has completed the course.

Screaming Balloons

This one really isn’t a balloon game in the traditional sense, but it’s just as fun and too cool to leave out.

Style: Non-competitive

Type: Balloon Games

What You’ll Need:

  • A balloon for each kid
  • A small hex nut for each balloon

How to play:

  1. Drop a hex nut into each balloon, blow it up and knot it.
  2. Gather the kids around and ask them if they’ve ever heard a balloon scream.
  3. When you’re ready to demonstrate the “Screaming Balloon”, hold the balloon in both hands and move it rapidly in a circular motion. Can you hear it scream?
  4. The unique six-sided shape of the hex nut vibrates the walls of the balloon as it moves, producing a rather unique “screaming” sound. Make sure you have a good supply of balloons and hex nuts — because all your party guests (young and old) will want to try this one!
